At the start of the war the 1st Sherwood Foresters battalion were in India but they soon returned to England where they joined 24 Brigade of 8th Division. The division landed in France on 6th November, 1914 and on 19th November 1st Sherwood Foresters, after the individual companies had had some trench instruction, moved into the trenches for the first time when they took over the front line at Pont du Hem. On 20th November Maclean Dilworth was killed when he went to find a suitable spot for the machine-guns. He was shot at point blank range when making his way round a house not far from the enemy line. |
